eLuxury Blog: eLuxury Mattress Pads Meet Flammability Standards without Flame Retardant Chemicals

At eLuxury, we are not only diligent in manufacturing the most comfortable mattress pads on the market, but we are also committed to the safety and well-being of our customers. All eLuxury Mattress Pads pass flammability standards without the use of harmful flame retardant chemicals

Flame Retardant Fabric

The flammability standards of our products have been the top priority for our company since day one, as it has for our customers over the years. One of the most common questions we receive in our Customer Service Department is, “Do you use flame retardants on your mattress pads?”

The answer is no. We do not use any flame retardants on any of our mattress pads, from our memory foam mattress toppers to our rayon pads, due to the potential health risks that come along with these chemicals. Instead of using fire retardant chemicals, we use fire retardant material that meets federal flammability standards.

Our mattress pads have been laboratory-tested and certified for the Federal Register, U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission 16 CFR Part 1362. This is the standard of the flammability of mattress and mattress pads and was initially adopted in the 1970s to address the issue of bedding igniting due to lit cigarettes, which, at the time, was a common issue.

The 16 CFR Part 1632 is an important standard that measures a mattress pad's resistance to ignition. This is tested by exposing the surface to cigarettes that have been lit, and, to ensure a controlled environment, this test is conducted in a draft-free room.

All surfaces of the mattress pad are tested, including smooth, quilted, or tufted locations. A second round of tests is also conducted on the same areas of the mattress pad between two sheets. A total of 18 cigarettes are burned onto the product to ensure accuracy.

Here you can see where the burn tests were done for our Standard Mattress topper.

Here you can see the burn test markings conducted on our Cooling Mattress Pad.

Fire Retardant Material Certification

For products to pass this test and receive the certification, the cigarettes are lit and placed on the mattress pad’s surface to burn. Each cigarette is not burned for more than 0.16 inch when placed on the product. After the cigarette has been extinguished, the char marks left behind on the mattress pad can be no larger than 2’’ in any direction, with the mark originating from the original cigarette location. If one of the surfaces of the mattress pad does not pass this test, the entire product is rejected. Our fire retardant bedding passed these tests and is certified as safe bedding.

The Problem With Flame Retardant Chemicals

Some other products get their fire-resistant capabilities with the use of flame-retardant chemicals. While these chemicals can often help in preventing fires, many of them are not good for your health whatsoever.

These chemicals are placed on things like mattress pads, mattress protectors, and other bed toppers. But they are not chemically bound to the products, so they could easily hop from your mattress pad to your clothes. They can even find their way into your food, drink, and the air you breathe.

It has been shown that flame retardants can cause a number of different health problems, including neurological damage, hormone disruption, and even cancer.

Flame-resistant chemicals are dangerous because they can bioaccumulate in humans, meaning they stay in your system for a very long time, slowly increasing over the years. This can lead to chronic health problems as the chemical levels rise.

This is why firefighters are adamantly opposed to the use of these chemicals in any products. They are exposed to these chemicals all the time — and the cancer they cause — is the leading killer of firefighters.

How Are eLuxury Products Fire Safe?

Even though we don’t use any of these harmful chemicals, our products are still flame retardant, but how do we do it?

Well, it’s simple. The materials we use to make our mattress pads and toppers are already flame-retardant. You can have the relief knowing you’re far from harmful chemicals and still enjoy that pressure relief for your back.

Some of the most common materials we use are polyurethane, polyurethane foam, and rayon from bamboo, which burn far slower than standard cotton. These materials are what make it possible for these pads to pass the flammability standards while still being machine washable, breathable, and comfortable.

At eLuxury, we care about our customers’ safety above all else, and we’re not willing to compromise one area of safety for another. That’s why we create products like this. We want you to be safe from flames and harmful chemicals alike.

How To Care for eLuxury Mattress Pads

Because these products are made of unique materials, you’ll want to take care of them a bit differently than you would a standard mattress pad

Caring for our pillow top mattress pads is super easy but still a bit different. You can throw your mattress pad in the washing machine, making sure to use cold water. When it’s time to dry, you can tumble dry using low heat, and you’re good to go.

If you like your beds medium firm and have one of our memory foam pads, cleaning is a bit different. First, vacuum up any excess dirt and debris. Then spot clean any stains with a stain remover. After that, sprinkle baking soda across the pad and let it sit for several hours. Then, vacuum up all the baking soda, and you’re done.
